Florida Prep President Dr Marshall Willman
Hello, I'm Dr. Marshall Willman.
On behalf of the entire Florida Preparatory Academy (Florida Prep) family, I welcome you to our school.
At Florida Prep we are honored to develop young men and women who blend academic ability, integrity, and good character, along with a knowledge of world-cultures, into a powerful force—well prepared for future success, growth, and leadership.
Our academic focus offers a newly revamped curriculum with interdisciplinary, STEAM, and specialized writing components. With early goal-setting strategies, after-school academic assistance, and college planning, Florida Prep graduates are well equipped with the knowledge and skills to successfully enter their college of choice, and the international workforce.
Florida Prep students also enjoy a unique nurturing atmosphere that pervades all aspects of school life; as a multi-cultural academy our reach spans well beyond Florida with students from 25 states throughout the U.S. and from more than 20 countries around the world.
Each year in honor of our diversity and demonstrating the breadth of the Florida Prep family, we raise the flags of students from new countries in the Hall of Flags; an event encompassing both honor and tradition. Our students leave us not only with an appreciation of other regions and cultures but far-reaching friendships that will last a lifetime.
At Florida Prep, the focus is the future, and I hope your tour through this website will be the starting point for a long-lasting relationship with our academy.
Warm Regards,
Marshall D. Willman
OUR CAMPUS
Set in 11 acres of lush tropical landscape, the Florida Prep campus boasts a full sized sports field, baseball nets, gymnasium, outdoor concert area, tennis courts, landscaped gardens and many locations to gather, chat or to seek solitude.
A large, open, grassy play area within our middle school campus allows for unstructured fun and activities, such as playing ball or tag, and provides lots of space for students to enjoy the company of their peers and to develop social and language skills.
OUR HISTORY
In 1925, Ernest Kouwen-Hoven erected the first building on what is now the Florida Preparatory Academy campus. It was a magnificent Spanish Mediterranean-style mansion, complete with an authentic Art Deco interior.
The Lincoln Hotel 1926
He used the mansion as his home for only one year before selling it in 1926 to A.S. Widrig, who added extra rooms to it and renamed the property "The Lincoln Hotel." In 1957, The Lincoln Hotel was sold to August J. Rimer, the original owner of the Green Bay Packers. He renamed the hotel "The Belcelona."
In 1961, Mr. Rimer sold The Belcelona Hotel to Mr. Jonathan Dwight, an educator and aviation enthusiast from New Jersey. Several months later, with his wife Emmy Dwight, he founded Florida Air Academy, a military-style college preparatory school for young men.
In the fall of 2005, the Academy began accepting female students in both boarding and day capacities. The girls made an excellent contribution to the school and raised the bar academically. There have been five female valedictorians since the school became coeducational.
In 2011, Florida Air Academy celebrated its 50th Anniversary year. Four years later in June of 2015, FAA became Florida Preparatory Academy (Florida Prep) to more accurately reflect its college preparatory identity. The AFJROTC program became an optional elective instead of a requirement. The flight program continues to offer students the opportunity to study to obtain their private pilot's license at age 16!
The Academy is now undergoing another change in identity. In 2017 the school was purchased by California-based investment company, Newopen USA. As a result, major investments in campus technology, the expansion of the campus footprint and dormitory refurbishment are currently underway.
A number of new support programs, including SAT and ACT prep, are being introduced, and a new academic STEAM-focused curriculum, designed to utilize our new campus facilities, is in the pipeline. An active faculty recruitment drive is yielding top-class talent from within the USA and beyond. Academics, leadership, character, and preparing students for college and a global business environment continues to be our primary focus.
Hall of Flags building from outside
Florida Prep is now located in one of the fastest growing technological communities in the United States, the Space Coast Corridor, a far cry from the sleepy small town the Dwights came upon in 1961. They would no doubt be proud to note how their school has evolved to meet the growing needs of the area, and also the new student body, one firmly established in the 21st Century with a desire to embrace technology and to touch the global marketplace in which they live.
We are experiencing an exciting transition; our history is still in the making!

Tuition & Fees
While the estimated cost of a private school may seem like a substantial amount of money, the dividends it pays are enormous. Florida Preparatory Academy boasts a 100% college acceptance rate. Your child will learn critical study skills and time-management skills that will guide him/her through academic success at every level.
Florida Prep is proud to be able to make contributions, in the form of academic merit scholarships, family, and incentive awards, to offset our domestic and international students' tuition costs.
Our students earn millions of dollars’ worth of scholarships every year. These factors make the estimated cost of private school not an expense, but rather an important investment in your child’s future success in college and in life!

Dual enrollment
What is University Dual Enrollment?
Dual enrollment gives your child the opportunity to take university courses by allowing them to be enrolled in more than one academic institution at the same time. Some students use this as an opportunity to earn university credits relevant to their anticipated future major, or simply to sample different courses to help them decide what they want to study after high school. Regardless of the reason why a student signs up, dual enrollment can save families the cost of up to one year’s tuition, around $40,000 at a private university.
Florida Prep offers dual enrollment opportunities at Florida Institute of Technology and Eastern Florida State College. Keep reading to learn how Florida Prep can help your child reach their academic goals.
How Do You Apply For Dual Enrollment?
Applicants to the dual enrollment program must be a domestic or international high school student with transcripts that indicate they could potentially succeed in completing a rigorous first-year university course. The Florida Prep Guidance Department will identify your child as a suitable applicant and will assist them with the application process. The following standards would generally apply:
Cumulative GPA: 3.00 (unweighted) on a 4.00 scale
Combined SAT (Critical Reading and Math): 1100 (550 math portion if courses in math, science or engineering are desired)
ACT: 24 (25 math sub-score if courses in math science or engineering are desired)
Dual Enrollment at Florida Tech and Eastern Florida
Students interested in Dual Enrollment through Eastern Florida may receive enough credit hours to graduate with their Associate's Degree at the time of their high school graduation, giving them a head start on their collegiate career.
Students interested in Florida Tech may accumulate up to 24 semester credit hours, and in special circumstances, may be evaluated for additional credit hours based upon the recommendation of the Academic Support Center Director at Florida Tech.

ALUMNI
Our alumni span the world, and as an academy we are incredibly proud of their achievements. It is no idle boast to say 'Friendships made at Florida Prep last a lifetime," and both young and old alumni maintain their own communications channels and arrange reunions. Here we shine a light on those individuals for what they accomplished during their time at the academy and their lives thereafter.
How did FAA/FPA Impact Their Lives?
"It was a pivotal part of who I am. Most people do not understand the bond that we have formed. The lifelong friendships that will always be a part of us. We grew up together as brothers."
Ross Lindy '89
"It molded my life, I still practice things I learned there."
Monte Matarese '71
"Probably one of the most influential parts of my life and parts of my childhood growing up."
Jarrod Buchman '90
"I have been very blessed throughout my life, both before and after my years at FAA, but those special years at FAA allowed me to explore so many new possibilities; the structure and discipline of military order, the strength that comes from working as a team in drill and sports, and the most important traits a boy becoming a man can learn - honor, integrity, and character that came from the guidance of so many fine leaders, teachers, and commanders that guided my growth through those wonderful years."

STUDENT LIFE
At Florida Prep, our day isn't over when the last bell rings. We have an abundance of after-school clubs and activities every day, athletic team practices, intramural sports, residential programming, nightly study hall and academic tutoring which for some students means their day may not end until bedtime!
While you will find activities happening on campus in the evening hours for our boarding students, Florida Prep also has a large day student population. Our day students come from the communities surrounding Melbourne and add to our diverse student population. Many times our boarding students will even spend the weekends or holidays at the homes of our day students as they become very close while at Florida Prep. Day students are welcomed and encouraged to participate in all aspects of the school, including events hosted by the residential life team.
In 2019 we introduced our House System to our student body. Every student is sorted into one of four houses and will stay in that house from their first day of school until they graduate from Florida Prep. Each house contains students from a variety of backgrounds and every grade level.
We have students join our Falcon Family from all over the world bringing with them their own unique life experiences and cultures which they share with their peers and the faculty. Each year we celebrate our diverse student body with an event called International Festival with unique student performances and a meal with flavors from around the world.
HOUSE SYSTEM
The Florida Prep House system is designed to foster a healthy yet competitive culture, while promoting the values and skills we believe will encourage a higher level of achievement in our student body.
The system consists of four Houses: Koch, Stafford, Grissom and Scott, between which our student body is divided. All students are assigned a House and remain a member of that house for their entire time at Florida Prep. The Houses compete for points through academics, athletics and community service. Points may also be accumulated through individual achievement, periodic House Games, and House Cup events. Each House has an adult head-of-house and dedicated student leadership chosen to their roles by the head-of-house. The structure of the House System is designed to rely heavily on student involvement and input. We believe a student driven Campus Life encourages the highest percentage of involvement and creates the most meaningful experiences.
Florida Prep's House System is designed to foster student involvement in volunteer work, academic competitiveness, community awareness, and promote strong mental and physical health. Through the House System we are able to maintain meaningful school traditions, while simultaneously creating and make new ones for the students to celebrate in the decades to come.

BOARDING EXPERIENCE
When you make the decision to board your child at Florida Prep you are not simply choosing a school, you are choosing a home away from home and our family focus remains our top priority. Our residential students live together in double occupancy rooms with other students from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures, interests and personalities. This gives our students the rare opportunity to make friends from all around the world, learn about different cultures and maybe even learn a new language!
Our residential dorms are located in the Hall of Flags – a historic building at the heart of our campus. Boys and girls live in separate halls which are monitored by a student Hall Leader and our Residential Life Staff. We have at least two members of our staff present 24/7 to assist with all aspects of boarding life.
We offer two options for boarding at Florida Prep – either five or seven days. Our five-day boarding students are fully integrated into on-campus life; however, they spend the weekends with their families in their own homes. Our seven-day boarding students are our full time residents, enjoying the complete boarding experience in preparation for their collegiate future. There are on and off-campus events planned every weekend, which sometimes includes trips to nearby college campuses, Orlando malls, theme parks and other attractions.
Our Residential Life Team works with our boarding students to develop residential programs for the evenings and weekends. Fun events, including smoothie night, make-it-yourself crafting nights, study hall trivia, chilli cook-offs and and even a ramen noodle night ensuring our students are kept occupied and engaged. While these programs are designed with boarding students in mind, our day students are always welcomed and encouraged to attend and try something new!
There is a place for every student at Florida Prep. We have a large variety of clubs and organizations; many founded by members of our student body. We encourage all of our students to try something new, to create new clubs that enable them to share their unique interests with others and to respect their peers within the Florida Prep community.
Meet the Residential Life Team!
We have at least two members of the Residential Life team on shift 24/7 while school is in session.

What is University Counseling?
The university application process is an exciting and personal journey for every student and it is our goal at Florida Prep to ensure that all students are prepared to successfully continue their education at the university level and beyond.
We have designed a comprehensive university education program for each grade of school and our guidance team meets many times with each student during the university application process.
Visits to the Florida Prep campus from university admissions representatives are used to expose our students to a variety of university-related information and group sessions. These sessions are led by our guidance team and cover topics such as the financial aid processes.
The program is designed to focus individual attention on each student, particularly seniors, during this critical time in their lives; attention that most high schools are simply unable to provide due to the large number of students allocated to each counselor.

DINING AT FLORIDA PREP
Florida Prep offers an array of healthy food options to our students at meal times. We utilize a "school cafe" dining style, giving our students more choice in what they eat. Besides the main dish offered, students can choose from a selection of ready made grab-and-go items, such as salads, sandwiches and fruit cups.
Our dining hall is serviced through Metz Culinary Management under the direction of Chef Eric Schappert. Chef Eric also teaches a culinary elective that is open to all students.
ATHLETICS
Florida Prep Athletics continues a rich tradition of developing our student-athletes as leaders in the classroom, in our community, and within their sport.
Our overall goal is to prepare all of our student-athletes to be able to participate in the sport of their choice at the desired level for which they strive. Many of our student-athletes are seeking the possibility of continuing their athletic dreams on the collegiate level. Some of our student-athletes are seeking to experience new sports to find preferences for future participation. The remainder of our student-athlete population enjoys the opportunity to participate in athletics recreationally as a social outlet with peers. Our program is designed to accommodate the needs and interests of all of our student- athletes.
Our Falcon athletic teams include: Boys' and Girls' Basketball, Track and Field, Cross Country, Golf, Tennis, and Soccer Club.
